Hi all,

I just finished reading The Couple Next Door by Shari Lapena and I thought I’d share a mini review/my thoughts about the novel!

The book is about a couple who are struck by a mysterious tragedy one night while they are at a dinner party next door. The novel explores every aspect surrounding the tragedy and explains how the mystery gets solved.

The characters are so believable, I immediately got attached to them and felt like I was in their head when reading from their point of view. The story really captivated me right from the beginning, since the main event happens in the first chapter, which is only a few pages long. I was immediately intrigued and didn’t want to put it down. It seems like in almost every chapter, we uncover surprising details that can’t make us stop reading there; we have to continue onto the next chapter.

The ending surprised me, I was not expecting it at all! I don’t think I have ever been this shocked at the way a book ended. It’s definitely a tie between this and Allegiant by Veronica Roth. I still can’t believe it… what?! I’m not sure how it would play out if she were to write a sequel, as in if she’d have enough to write about, but I really feel like I have questions that need to be answered.

When I started reading it, I was immediately reminded of The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins because of a few similarities. One of these being the alcohol theme. The main tragedy or event happens when the main characters (Marco and Anne) are under the influence of alcohol, such as Rachel was the night Megan disappeared in The Girl on the Train. There’s also the fact that Anne worked in an art gallery, just like Megan did.

I love that it’s so easy to read, the pages aren’t too long, so I was able to fly through the book. If you’ve got a few hours on your hands, I’m sure it can be read in one sitting. All in all, I highly recommend it, especially if you liked The Girl on the Train. It gets sort of creepy at times, I had trouble reading it at night! I really loved it though and I’m urging you to go pick it up!

I hope that you enjoyed this review/my thoughts!

What are some books that I should read next? Let me know in the comments below, I’d love some suggestions!
